British Values

At St Giles Nursery, teaching British values means providing a curriculum which actively promote(s) the fundamental British values;

Promoting Democracy

Ensure that all children and families within the school have a voice that is listened to, and demonstrate how democracy works by actively promoting democratic processes (such as involving children in choosing where to play)

Let children know their views count and encourage everyone to value each other’s opinions and values. You can help demonstrate democracy in action, for example, by letting children share views on what activity should come next with a show of hands.

Provide activities that involve turn-taking, sharing and collaboration

Give children opportunities to develop enquiring minds by creating an atmosphere in our setting where all questions are valued

Promoting the Rule of Law

Ensure that children understand their own and others’ behaviour and its consequences, helping them to distinguish right from wrong

Work with children to create the rules and the codes of behaviour, such as agreeing the rules about tidying up, and also ensuring children understand that the rules apply to everyone

Teaching Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Ensuring children have the right to say ‘no’ and be respected for their choices.

Encouraging children with the support of adults to solve problems for themselves and to work together as a group.

To learn that their needs and everyone’s needs matter.

Including world religions, cultures and festivals, families and communities in our planning to teach children about the world in which they live.

Linking children’s learning so they understand they are part of a much wider world displaying posters and reading books which show world religions and cultures, blended families, disability, equality of opportunity etc.

Arrange visits whereby children can engage with the wider community

Provide resources and activities that challenge gender, cultural and racial stereotyping

Our Nursery team work hard to role model, talk and explain key ideas and teaching throughout group learning and play.

Our Personal, Social and Emotional Curriculum, Language into Literacy and Understanding the World Curriculum all include many developing opportunities to consider and understand British Values.
